EDUCATION & TRAINING DIG SAFE CERTIFICATION CLASS

Friday, Feb 26th, 2021 NUCA’s “Dig-Safe Certification Program” provides training to contractors, excavators, landscapers, public works employees – anyone working with or around pipelines and underground utilities – to perform best digging practices adhering to Washington Call Before You Dig Law (RCW 19.122) that went into effect Jan 1, 2013. Students will receive a certificate and training ID good for 2 years. Topics Covered Include • Definitions (as defined by WA RCW 19.122 & ID Title 55-2202) • Washington’s Call Before You Dig Law • Excavator & Facility Operator Duties • Excavation • Underground Facility or Pipeline Damage • Safety Committee & Commission Authority • Damage Prevention & Best Practices • DIRT Reporting Take Advantage of the Online Educational Resources Through Idaho 811 & Idaho Damage Prevention Board

NATIONAL NEWS & ADVOCACY U.S. Chamber Opens "Build By the Fourth of July" Campaign The U.S. Chamber of Commerce greeted Congress with its new infrastructure advocacy campaign. "Investing in America’s infrastructure is critical to our economic recovery, prosperity, and quality of life. The longer our elected leaders wait to pass legislation, the more our roads, highways and bridges will deteriorate," opened its website. NUCA is a Chamber member and agrees that the new 117th Congress needs to move this critical national issue to the top of its to-do list. Read more here. Senate Confirms Pete Buttigieg As New USDOT Secretary On a 86-13 vote, the U.S. Senate confirmed on Feb. 2 former presidential candidate and South Bend, Indiana, mayor Pete Buttigieg as the new secretary for the U.S. Dept. of Transportation. Buttigieg has been an ardent advocate for increasing infrastructure resources. NUCA supported Buttigieg in the confirmation process and looks forward to working with him and his staff to prioritize water infrastructure projects across the nation. Read more here.

NUCA Opposes Increase in Truck Liability Coverage This week NUCA joined a trucker's coalition in opposing any increase in the existing minimum liability coverage mandated by federal regulations. Not only is such an increase unnecessary, it will do nothing to improve highway safety and would significantly increase costs. Increasing this coverage would affect all businesses transporting property, including those in the materials industries. Read more here. FOCUS ON SAFETY Trench Safety Stand Down: June 14-18, 2021 NUCA leadership released the dates for the next TSSD, scheduled for June 14-18, 2021. NUCA's member-wide safety stand down presents the opportunity for employers to talk directly to emplo


yees and others about safety around excavations and protecting employees from trenching hazards. This will be NUCA's eighth TSSD event (and our second June Trench Safety Month), so please mark those dates on your 2021 training calendars and plan to participate. NUCA WINS: A Best Practice in Reporting NUCA's Workplace Incident Notification System (NUCA WINS) is an incident recording app that employees' can easily operate on their mobile device to document the situation at the point-of-occurrence. In a matter of a few minutes' incidents can be easily and completely documented, including: injuries and illnesses; property, liability, and utility strikes; near misses; safety observations; and more.
